Food Allergy Awareness Week

Food Allergy Awareness month takes place every May, with a special week within May where extra dedication is given to the food allergy cause. This May, get involved, show your support, and become more teal!

What’s the Deal with Teal?

Teal is the national color for food allergy awareness. Just like pink ribbons are used for breast cancer awareness, the teal ribbon represents the food allergy cause. From teal pumpkins on Halloween to teal t-shirts and more, the color teal has become the beacon of the food allergy awareness cause. Other colors you may see this month include green for celiac disease awareness or gray for asthma awareness. Show some teal love with our favorite teal hashtags on social media such as #tealtakeover and #thetealpumpkinproject.

When is Food Allergy Awareness Week?

May is the designated month for food allergy, celiac, and asthma awareness! In particular, May 9th-15th is highlighted as a special week for food allergy awareness. During the month of May, consider taking extra steps to advocate for food allergy awareness and show some teal love!

Who Can Participate in Food Allergy Awareness Week?

Anyone! Whether you have food allergies or not, everyone is welcome to participate in food allergy awareness week. Schools, nonprofit organizations, food pantries, daycares, business companies, restaurants, families, and individuals are all great places to encourage participation in food allergy awareness week.

How can I Show Support for Food Allergy Awareness?

Wearing teal clothes, accessories, or ribbons, posting about food allergy awareness on social media, or taking the time to share food allergy facts with others are all great ways to show your support this week! While there are many ways to show support for the teal movement, use the schedule below to show support all week long:

May 9: Teal Takeover Day! Support awareness for food allergies by wearing teal clothes or putting out teal house decorations. If you are a business with a lighted building, consider setting the lights to be a teal color for this week. Then, snap a pic for social media using the hashtags #foodallergyawarenessweek and #tealtakeover.

May 10: Menu Monday! Try out a new top 9 allergen free recipe to put your allergy friendly cooking skills to the test. Not sure what to make? Join the live cooking demo at 6 pm ET on FARE’s Facebook page for allergy-friendly meals and recipes.

May 11: Teaching Tuesday! Make it a goal to learn something new about food allergies today, or to teach someone else a new food allergy fact. Explore blog posts on Food Allergy Allies, or visit a trusted source on google.

May 12: Donation Day! Consider giving a contribution to a food allergy awareness nonprofit organization such as Food Allergy Allies, FARE, or the Food Equality Initiative. Monetary donations or volunteer hours will be much appreciated.

May 13: Take Action Thursday! Take a small step to advocate for food allergy awareness by sharing a post for food allergy awareness on social media, reading a book about food allergies to a child, or sharing the teal cause with a friend.

May 14: Fri-YAY! Today, show your teal support to a friend or family member with food allergies! A special activity, homemade treat, or a simple text can show your support.

May 15: Weekend Wrap up! Finish out food allergy awareness week by taking a look at the amazing week of activity you have just been a part of. Take a moment to congratulate yourself on participating, and make a pledge to continue your teal support going forward.
